Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before making our film I researched into the exact codes and conventions of our genre of title sequence. The title sequence we have produced used the forms and conventions of real media product in regards to our genre of a war/spy/thriller. We did this by telling a story through our title sequence; our title sequence shows a man chasing, killing and taking an object from another man, then giving it to his boss. This suits the conventions because this prologue would help to start the movie with the audience already knowing this event has happened. The way in which our title sequence has been shot portrays our genre of film, by how we used archive footage at the beginning of it, informing the audience of the time period when our sequence is set. When making our title sequence we wanted the audience to be “glued to the screen”, meaning we wanted to put title credits in, but wanted the audience to focus more on the action on screen. We achieved this by filming many camera shots and with quick editing we would be able to keep the audience in suspense. I was particularly pleased with the music we used in our title sequence, because when we started looking for what music we should use, we wanted something that would build suspense, like the titles of ‘Seven’ which I studied and was inspired by, in the sense of music use. The typography we used when making our title sequence matches the genre of our film because it blurs in and out, signifying a mystery and the typography showing Russia and American font shows the two sides in the film (good and evil).

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The title sequence we have produced represents particular social groups and those who we targeted our film at in a non-bias way. When we were thinking about what we wanted our sequence to show we wanted to make a sequence which would show a balanced opinion, in that we did not want to be seen as supporting one side of the Americans or Russians in the Cold War (50’s/60’s). We decided to do this because it allowed us to put an enigma in the audience’s head as to which we are more in supportive of and adds a sense of mystery to our title sequence. The social groups we were intending to target our title sequence at were predominantly male and give them a story they could get their teeth into and would challenge their opinions on the matters of the cold war.

What kind of media institution might distribute you media produce and why?

When researching as to what institution might distribute our film, we referred back to the group activities we had completed in previous lessons, when we researched many differing film institutions and looked into the depths of what type of films they tend to produce in terms of budgets and how much profit they would expect to make from a film. In terms of genre as to who would distribute our film we looked initially at Paramount Vantage and although they would give their name to our film because of the needed budget we would need, and star performer in Leonardo Dicaprio it would not be in their greatest business interests if they distributed our film. We then discussed and researched into what studios would have the capital to fund our film; our findings came up with ‘Lionsgate’, famous for the SAW movies. But although they would have the money to fund our movie, the genre type would not suit there company as out genre was spy/thriller and they are best known for horror movies. After research we then realised that realistically there were only two distribution companies, which would have the funding to allow us to make our film as we wanted to. These were Warner Bros and Universal Studios, although Warner Bros has the capital to make our film, we feel our films gender would be much more suited to the vast range of films which Universal Studios produce and we felt that with this label in the pitch for out film we would be able to attract the directors we needed in Tomas Alfredson, after his work on the ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, a film which genre can be compared to the genre of film we wanted to make. We would also be able to attract the big name stars we want in our film and the distribution that Universal would give us in terms of advertising would be perfect, because they are a well-respected company.

Who would the audience be for your media product?

Our film would target a range of audiences; predominantly the film would be aimed at males ranging from the ages of 15-35. It would be aimed at this age group because of the content of the film and genre of the film as a spy/thriller, as well as their being some graphic and violent scenes in our title sequence, which involves a man being shot by another. It would not be acceptable for an audience lower than the age of 15 to see this legally; hence we have given our film a rating of 15+. As well as a specific age group being our predominant demographic, as we have the ‘STAR’ power of Leonardo Dicaprio, which would attract subsidiary audiences, such as, dedicated and passionate Leonardo Dicaprio fans that would willingly pay and see any film he has been part of.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Our title sequence attracts our audience by the enigmas it produces and the questions it puts in their heads when watching it. They are thinking who are these people, why was there achieve footage at the beginning, who is the man in room and most importantly what happens next. We have done this with a range of different types of cinematography with the changing camera angles of high to low, etc. Also with the props and locations we have used, could easily be judged as being set in the time era of when the film is set. I also feel with have addressed the audience by the sound track and the quick cut shots intensifying the action on the screen. The music I feel matched the mood we want the audience to be in of insecurity because they do not know what is going to happen next.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? D

During this project I have learnt many new thing about the construction and what it takes to make a film and title sequence. From pitching the idea to storyboarding to editing I have learnt allot. As the cameraman of the group in this sequence I have learnt how to get the best out of the footage we were shooting, by experimenting with different camera angles to use and filming techniques. Also even though it was not my role in the group to edit, I helped in the editing process and know how to use ‘Final Cut Pro’; the software we used to edit our title sequence. As a result of this project I now know how to cut and edit a piece of footage as well as adding effects and titles to make it look professional. In addition to this this project has been the first time I have used blogger instead of a notebook to make all my notes and findings on. This was at first challenging, being a new application to use, but eventually I learnt how to use it, this was a particularly effective way to store notes on because it could be edited easily and had the functions to allow videos, pictures and graphs added to it easily. I have learnt a great deal about technologies and process of constructing title sequence.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that the preliminary task was vital in making our title sequence as what we wanted it to be because we made some errors and did not judge the time we had in our preliminary continuity task in this project. When I look back at how the preliminary task panned out I am to be honest not happy with it because we had some continuity error because we did not get enough footage, but during the filming of our title sequence because we learnt from our past mistakes, although tedious at times we got two takes of every shot we needed. When looking back at our preliminary task we did not finish it as well as we would have liked, although we included all of the necessary elements we needed in our film, it does not in terms of editing look very good because we simply ran put of time. Through our preliminary task we realised the magnitude of what needed to be done and with the help of our Google calendar we managed our time and easily met the deadlines when they occurred. The final lesson I feel we learnt and most importantly learnt is to be able to work as a team. During the planning process for our preliminary task their was a conflict between the group and we were unhappy with working together and ended up not doing our best in this task but after this we had a group meeting put our differenced aside and focused on the greater good for the group and we worked I feel fantastically on the project where we delegated roles and set deadlines and every member of the group met them without fail. In conclusion I feel since the preliminary task as a group we have learnt allot and this can be shown in our final product, which I am very satisfied with.

February Week 4

During this week as a group we reedited our title sequence, to meet the specification of improvement suggested in last week’s lesson. The sequence is now completely finished and we are very pleased with it. As well as it being reedited it is now under the two minute mark which is the specification from the exam board. In addition to reediting, this week I have begun to construct my evaluation of this project. I have started to evaluate the success of the group, how well we worked, what we have learned and how much contribution I have made to the groups work as a whole. The evaluation will be posted on my blog within the next couple of days

Review of Pitch Feedback

The feedback we received as a whole was mainly positive with fellow students and teacher complimenting is on the idea and concept of our title sequence which included the archive footage which set the time period of our title sequence. The typography we used in our sequence of showing both American and Russian titles being shown at the same time which connotates the two sides of the conflict and the story. We also received allot of positive feedback for our cinematography and how we filmed this sequence to make it believable that it was set in the 1960;s with props and timeless locations such as the church.

However even though the majority of the feedback we received was positive, we also received negative feedback. The most obvious negative feedback we were bound and expected to receive was the fact that we had some editing errors, which were picked up by our fellow students. Another negative aspect was that our title sequence was to long but we received suggestions on how we could shorten it by removing the ‘Universal Studios’ distribution logo at the begging of our title sequence

Overall as a group we are very pleased with the feedback we received, albeit some minor editing errors and length of the title sequence all feedback was positive and we feel we have made the title sequence which we wanted to make and are very happy with our final sequence. We were also appreciative of the negative feedback because it now allows us to spend the final week of editing making our title sequence better.

Pitch Feedback Forms

Below are several of the feedback forms we received after our pitch, which not only shows us what kind of reception our title sequence received and how we could improve it so we can be ready for the final deadline next week.

February Week 2/3

February week 2/3

Over the next couple of weeks, we as a group analysed all the footage we had produced and constructed all the footage into our storyboarded concept. We were particularly pleased with the way that we got more than enough footage, which meant we would not have to reshoot and this would make our title sequence look more authentic because we would not have to reshoot certain scenes which would make it obvious to the audience that the time of shoot for one certain scene was changed to another in order to gain the much needed footage. The deadline for our final piece to be screened to the rest of our fellow students in order to receive feedback is the 3rd week of February.

Over the 2nd week of February we made significant progress and as well as editing our title sequence together in cooperated our final choice of music into the sequence. As a group we are particularly happy the way our music fits into our title sequence. Friday soon came about and we were ready for our pitch to the class and were very confident with our finished piece. As a group we decided that it would be best for me to pitch our title sequence. I introduced the film and gave brief plot to my fellow students of why we made our film and that we hoped they would like it. Feedback forms to be published in a later post on this blog. The feedback forms we got back were very generally positive and this gave us an insight on not only what they thought of our title sequence but on how we could improve it in the following week to meet the final deadline before half term.

Sunday 12 February 2012

Sound

Throughout the latter stages of the editing process for our title sequence we have decided to not use any sounds and only music because this gives our sequence the edge we wanted. This also makes it look more professional and gives it a unique effect.

Location Shots extra - Cemetery

....

Location Shots – Cemetery

Below are pictures taken by Tolga of the shoot, which commenced on the Friday lesson in our newfound location of a local cemetery. This was an excellent location, albeit being a very cold morning, which in term gave a really nice effect to our filming. We used this location because it linked in with our pervious footage, which was filmed in a church. Ryan and Sam are the actors in our title sequence. This filming experience was very successful and as a group we are very pleased how it worked out.

Location Shots - Church

Below are location shots taken by Tolga on the Mondays lesson when we filmed in St Michael’s church located near our school. We were very impressed with the location and the hospitality of the vicar is incredible. We decided to use this location because of the essence of a church being a timeless location and it really suited our 1950’s themed title sequence. The wide open spaces, pillars and lighting the church provided us with were fantastic.

February Week 1

This week I feel was a personal best for productivity in our group. On the Monday we filmed in our church location, Wednesday we started to fully edit our sequence and on Friday we was able to finish all of our filming. All in all a very successful week for our group

Monday we came into school, earlier to make sure we were able to get the equipment we needed. Ryan was unfortunately unavailable to help with the filming on Monday due important rehearsals for his drama exam, nonetheless me, Sam and Tolga went to the church which we had already arranged an appointment with the vicar last Friday, he was glad to see us and was very friendly throughout our filming. We then started the film and we had realised that this location was perfect, big spaces, good lighting and a timeless location, which was very needed for our title sequence, which is set in the time period of the 50’s. As a group we were able to get every shot and more we needed for the part of our sequence which shows the mans journey to then proceed to murder and steel the briefcase from the other man. We took location shots, which will be posted in another post. Overall this was a very satisfying session and we are very pleased with the results. When we got back to school we uploaded all of our new footage, screened it and Sam said he would start editing on Tuesday which he did.

During Wednesdays lesson as a group we had a discussion of how we will be able to make the audience believe the sequence is set in the 1950’s and as we have already used a church a suggestion to possibly film in a cemetery was decided and agreed. We said we would consider it and decide at the end of the lesson what were going to do. As a group we have decided that due to their skills and experience Sam and Ryan will edit our sequence and me and Tolga’s role will consist of the practical side of the project (filming, locations). During the two hours Sam and Ryan made great progress in editing and it is really coming into shape and I feel we will meet the deadline, which is next Friday. Mean while Tolga and me researched locations and updated our blogs. At the end of the lesson we decided that on Friday we would film in the cemetery, we drew up a list of everything we would need (cameras, batteries, fake blood etc.).

During Fridays lesson we went out of school to film our final scenes of our project, the location was simply perfect as a cemetery is a timeless location and due to it being a bitterly cold day gave a great effect. We filmed for the full two hours, Ryan played the part of the man who got shot and Sam was back in his role of the assassinator. I filmed all the footage today so it would show consistency of the techniques of filming, everything in the shoot went fantastically and at the end of the shoot we have now got all the footage we need, we just need to edit our footage and im sure we will easily be able to meet the deadline, which is next Friday. I am very happy of how our project is coming along and feel we have got some very good footage and when it is finished we will have a decent title sequence. When we got back to the school we uploaded all of our new footage, exported it ready for editing it next week.

Google Calender

During our project, as a group we have found that contact has not been an issue because we all have each other’s contact details, as well as creating a Google calendar which any group member can alter to decide when we will film or when we have a target we have to meet. This system has been very helpful due to it giving our group great organisation and focused on out goal to meet the deadline. Below is a print screen of our calendar and with all the dates we have used in our project.

Location orignal shot - School

The other location we decided to use for our title sequence and for the part of it where the man shoots another and takes the briefcase is in a church, we chose a church because there were many local churches and all we would have to do is ring them and we would have a location, but this turned our more difficult than we though we rang and spoke to at least 4 churches who rejected our proposal.

Luckily we contacted the nearest church to our school, spoke with the vicar and he accepted and set times and dates when it was possible to film, the location is prefect big open space, long corridors.

Below are shots of the school in which we have taken, to show our location of our title sequence. These pictures ore one of the locations where we initially shot and decided that we needed another location. We decided to change location because of the fact that we originally shot in a school corridor which gave us bad lighting, school display boards which would turn out to be tricky to film around when shooting. Also we had a main issue with the doors at the end of the corridor where we found it difficult to to make the shoot not like it was conducted in an actual school. We later decided that our final filming would be done in the school but we chose to use the administration block, which suited our purpose for our title sequence.

Location

During the filming of our title sequence we have had and are using two main locations, one being in a church and the other in our school, in the administration block

School

We decided to use the school because we knew that we would be able to get the footage we wanted only by shooting in the administration block. Be test shot other parts of the school but it did not look right for our film. Initially this was our last resort location to film because we would rather hade preferred to use an office to shoot in, but after being unable to locate a suitable office location we looked at the administration block and were pleasantly surprised to what we had found, a perfect location for the shooting of our scene where the man hands the briefcase to the boss.

January Week 4

During this week our group produced a lot of work and we are now on target of finishing our title sequence by the set-approaching deadline. On The Monday’s lesson we could not shoot because of the lack of cameras available. Throughout this lesson we planned for our scheduled Tuesday shoot in the upper floor of our school (administration block). We drew out and wrote sown each and every shot we would need.

On Tuesday even though this was out of lesson we arranged to shoot our footage in the upper block of the school, we recruited our teacher to play our actor (who receives the briefcase). This shoot went really well and we got all the shots we needed and are happy with the outcome of this shoot. During Wednesdays lesson unfortunately I was not in due to a university interview, the group carried on as usual and uploaded all 0of our new footage and in cooperated in into our editing sequence. All we need now is the shoot in our located church to happen.

We had a scheduled meeting at 9:00am on Thursday at our church but unfortunately by the time we located a camera it was 9:15am and due to us only having a half an hour slot to film in, we decided that we would not have enough time to shoot that day so we had a meeting with the vicar of the church and rescheduled our shoot for initially the flowing Thursday, we skilfully negotiated an earlier date of the Monday morning. We need to prepare for this shoot. On the Friday’s lesson we continued to edit our title sequence and me and Tolga went to take location shots.

What production company?

As we now know we will use nocturnal pictures as our production title. But why is this the case?

This is a production title which in cooperates all the names of the group and is in a very clean style but in terms of for our mystery/thriller film this would not be suitable and would better suit a teen movie

Our other production title and winner of the poll vote is nocturnal pictures, the look it has is exactly what we want for our title sequence because it has the edge that we need for our title sequence. The white text in front of the black background and type of font really does suit our title sequence.

Below are two examples of the feedback forms we handed out to help us decide on what our production company will be for our title sequence. Nocturnal pictures won convincingly.

Testing location filming

This I a clip of the shooting we conducted In Mondays lesson, after reviewing the footage we can see that the was in which we shot the footage it does not really look like a school and this is what we feared when filming but because we used the administration block of the school there are no school posters or stereotypical school items which show it has been filmed in a school. This is a clip of the shot where the unknown man walks towards the camera. Ideally we want to reshoot in our preferred location at a church but after speaking to my fellow group members we would be able to film it in our school.

Audience Feedback - What production company?

During Fridays lesson I conducted audience feedback research as to what production title we should use for our title sequence. I constructed a form, which had both Star productions and nocturnal pictures on it. In a resounding victory nocturnal pictures won by 20/6 votes. But many commented they preferred the STAR productions title but for the genre of our movie, nocturnal pictures would suit better. Many voters commented that maybe we could incorporate both designs together. Some suggestions as “STAR productions in association with Nocturnal picture. Below is a pie chart depicting the final results and scanned copy’s of five of the feedback forms we used (need to be completed)

Audience title credits feedback

We as a group felt it would be essential for us to gain some audience feedback forms, so we divided some hand-outs, which were, filmed un which chose what title credits we should use for our project. The results were that the audience feedback agreed with our own personal preference and of what type of credits should be used for out tile sequence. Below are scanned copy’s of filmed out feedback forms.

January Week 3

This week our media project appears to be finally coming together, all group member are now focused on what needs to be done to complete this project.

During Mondays lesson we decided that in order to be able to participate in a planned iMovie tutorial on Wednesdays lesson we needed some filming to edit during this lesson. Although it was not ideal and out real intention was to find a church to film in, we done a shoot trying many different camera angles of our title sequence using the up stairs administration block of out school. The resulting work turned out better than we though and gave us a real back up option as if the unfortunate case of us not being able to find a church to shoot in, we could use the church and make it work.

In Wednesdays lesson we had a tutorial on the basic of how to use iMovie, the program that would allow us to upload and edit our footage and title sequence. After completing the tutorial Sam proceeded to edit our initial footage as well as in cooperate the universal studios credit and our “star” production title. Also the Kennedy footage has been in cooperated into it and it’s looking very good. I was n charge of finding sound effects we needed for our title sequence, I used garage band and found explosion sounds for when the “iron curtain” credit appears. Also the sound of a heartbeat when the credits appear. These I feel will give a more professional and convincing effect to our film.

On Fridays lesson. Ryan was in charge of finding background sounds for our title sequence, Tolga’s job was to find the church and he proceeded to contact several churched. Sam proceeded to further edit out title sequence and I made some audience feedback forms involving what production company we should use. Either “star productions” or “nocturnal pictures.” This followed earlier audience feedback forms made by Tolga on what typography is right for our film, which is posted above.

This was a very productive week for our project and I feel as a team and a group we are now focused and will finish this project in good time and it will be of real quality.

Music for our title sequence

Our chosen music for our title sequence is ‘princes in the tower’, we have chosen this music for our title sequence because it matches the tone we want for our film because it is gritty and edgy and has a final conclusion we want when we reveal the final title credit which is the title of the film ‘The Iron Curtain’. Even though we are happy with this music, it was very hard to find because we are not allowed to use copyright protected music in our title sequence and therefore we had to find music which not only matched our 60’s theme but also was not copyrighted. We are very pleased with this music because it produced the right tone and edge we want our tile sequence to have.

Below is a link to the music we have chosen

Animatics

Above is the animatic f the storyboards we have created, we have made this because it shows our film in real time and gives us an idea of what the finished product of our film would look like. We made this originally using a photographers camera which was of much better quality but because this stopped working we changed to using a normal digital camera which produced a lack of quality picture but because of the time we had to complete this task we stuck with it because we still feel even though it may appear as a little blurry you can make out the plot of our film and each shot we will use in our finished product in this animation. If we were to compete this task again we would use a better quality of camera.

Storyboards

Below are scanned images of our storyboards to allow us to see what our finished film would look like and what directing and camera angles we are going to use as well as how long each shot of our film will be and how long in time duration our title sequence should be. Because of the lack of time we had to keep up to speed with the making process we split the shot list up and over the weekend we drew up 6 or 7 storyboarded shots each.

Who drew what storyboards?

January Week 2

To begin with we had a group meeting and discussed what needed to be done, we handed in our individually/group storyboards (6 drawn each). We then split into two groups Sam and Ryan proceeded to go into the computer room and search for locations we could shoot at because our original idea of filming at my dads office work fell through because we were not allowed to. They came back with the c0oncept of us filming in a church which would give a real, gritty effect to our film, they then proceeded to contact churches and got a refusal from a Greek church, they asked Mr Grimsley to contact Is local church in Lewisham and this is where we are going to be shooting for our film.

Meanwhile Tolga and me proceeded to compare the storyboard and fill in the details some group member missed such as camera angle shots/duration of shot. We then coloured the storyboards in to establish a good effect and make them look more professional. We then grabbed a camera and took still shots of each storyboarded shot and created an animatic video of our title sequence, which along with scanned images of our storyboards is posted above this post

During Wednesdays lesson me and Tolga had an exams, so the only other thing which we needed to find was the music for our sequence so Sam and Ryan went onto a copyright free website and found a perfect piece of music for our title sequence called “princes at the tower” which I will discuss in more detail in a later post. Finally on the Fridays lesson we decided who would gain access to each prop we needed, I would locate a (toy gun) ad Ryan would gain access to a briefcase.

JFK Footage

As a group we decided that in order to give our title sequence a unique appeal, we will incorporate archive footage into our title sequence to establish the time period we want our title sequence to be set it. The footage we will use is an extract from a speech from former President John F Kennedy. We have chosen this because the time of this speech is when we want to set our title sequence.

Below is the link to the archive footage we will incorporate into our title sequence.

January week 1

This week we had a group meeting and settled any disputes and concerns, which had arisen from, group members. We were given an ultimatum from our teach either sort out the group and work as a 4 or split the group into 2. We chose to stick as a 4 and put all of our differences aside and focussed on a common purpose our project.

After this was dealt with we got focused and finalised each shot we are going to need, this was a lengthy process and took the full two hours to complete. We decided to split the shots between the four of us and finish them over the weekend; we had the role of completing 6-7 storyboards shots each.

December Journal

In December as a recap the main decisions regarding our titles sequence were made. We had to create a concept for a full-length feature film with no limitations in terms of budget and stars. As a group of strong opinions we had several different ideas we had the following concepts

· Horror Film

· Kids Style film

· War film

· Action Film

The decision as what we were going to do caused some conflict as some members had strong causes for their film concept to be made. Eventually as a group we decided to create a film based around the cold war and Russia and America. We then in the following lessons proceeded to create a film idea involving this topic. We pitched our film in lesson and received some positive feedback and lots of ideas, which helped us finalise the idea for our film.

We decided as a group and because of the lack of time we had we would finalise the plot for our title sequence so we could start filming straight after half term and storyboarding. After finalising the story we decided that the typography of the sequence of having two languages incorporated into our sequence would be good to show both sides of America and Russia which are shown in out film

When the video of our film pitch is available, it will be posted on this blog

Designing of our production title

We decided as a group that in order to meet and complete all of our set objectives it would be wise to split the group in order to complete two separate tasks. Sam and Ryan would finalise the plot and deeper meaning behind our title sequence from which we as a group had already decided of having a cold war theme to it. Tolga and me would design and come up with our own production company for our film.

We had a vast in depth brainstorm as to what our production company could be and liked the idea of in cooperating out names into it. Our teacher names our group “RAST” when we were pitching our film and this gave me an idea if we rearrange the letters of our first names being, Sam, Tolga, Alex and Ryan. This would produce “STA

R”. As a group we decided tat this should be the name of our production studio.

We came up with this (below) as our original production title design, but did not feel the typography was what we needed for our film. We also asked others what film this production company would make and the response was comedy/spoof, when it should be a spy/thriller response.

This is another design (above) we created which does not show the letter "A" in the title because we felt this would show its a mystery, but we realize that the audience would not recognize our company as STAR but STR, so instead of the use of an A we have used an actual star in our final and chosen design (below)

This title design (below) is our chosen production title design and we feel this would be the type of styled company who would produce our film. We felt this typography portrays the genre of our film as a mystery, thriller well with the use of the top secret lettering as font.
